Preparing to enter Russia and «RuID» app

Step 1. Planning your arrival

1. Get acquainted with the latest information on migration rules, entry procedures  to Russia and border crossing rules;
2. Check the validity of your passport. The document must be valid on the planned date of entry into Russia. It must have space for entry and exit stamps;
3. Apply for a student visa (only for foreign citizens of countries with a visa regime);
4. No earlier than 90 days and no later than 72 hours before the planned date of entry into Russia, register your data in the RuID app and submit an application for entry into Russia (only for foreign citizens of countries with a visa-free regime). The link indicates the categories of foreign citizens who do NOT need to fill out an entry application. More detailed information is available here;
5. Read information on the rules for moving goods and things across the border. Please be informed that some goods are restricted or prohibited for transportation across the Russian border - they may be confiscated at customs. Detailed information can be found here;
6. Familiarize yourself with the airline's baggage rules (if applicable);
7. Read information how to get to your place of residence upon arrival in Russia;
8. Inform university staff about your planned date of arrival in Russia - send an email to international@mgutm.ru with the title "Arrival of an international student", indicating your full name, citizenship and date of arrival in Russia

Step 2. Planning your accommodation

1. Make sure you have chosen an accommodation place in the city  for the period of study (university dormitory, alternative housing options,  hotel/hostel);
2. If you plan to live in a dormitory please read information about checking into the dormitory procedure  and dormitory living rules;
3. If you plan to live outside the campus dormitory (alternative housing options, hotel/hostel) you must discuss and confirm with the administrator/owner of the accommodation on the possibility of getting migration registration in advance. If for some reason you cannot (or are refused) get migration registration you must find and choose another place to live in order to avoid the risk of violating migration laws. You should beware of scammers and not pay a fee (deposit) before arriving in Russia and signing an accommodation agreement. It is recommended to search for rental housing on approved and trusted websites (for example, Cian, Yandex.Nedvizhimost, Domclick, Arenda DOM.RF, Samolet).

Step 3. Preparation of medical documents

1. Purchase a voluntary medical insurance policy from one of insurance companies in the country of your citizenship/residence (or purchase an insurance policy upon arrival in Russia);
2. Prepare a medical certificate (086/u form) or its equivalent in the country of your citizenship/residence (the document must include a physician’s conclusion on the absence of contraindications to study at the university). The certificate must be valid for 1 year from the date of issue;
3. Prepare a medical certificate of X-ray fluorography examination. The certificate must be valid for 1 year from the date of issue;
4. Prepare a free-form medical certificate of vaccinations (optional);
5. Obtain a medical certificate from your attending doctor in case you need to take medications (optional, if necessary).

If medical documents are written in a foreign language they must be translated into Russian (a notarized translation is required).

The medical documents must be provided to the university staff upon arrival in Russia to get access to study process. If an international student does not have all required documents (or any of the documents) upon arrival then a student must obtain and provide the missing documents to the university staff within 1-3 days. The medical documents can be obtained within medical examination procedures under voluntary health insurance policy or on a paid basis.

5. Embassies/Consulates of foreign countries in Russia.

Step 5. Don't forget to bring with you

1. Required documents for enrollment/study/settling into a dormitory or alternative housing;
2. Original travel documents (passport, tickets, etc.);
3. Cash to stay in Russia (in US dollars or euros);
4. Warm clothes.
